A new educational institute of the Province is an opportunity to humbly thank God for giving us yet another medium to
serve and grow, an opportunity to reflect and review our ongoing ministry of education, an opportunity to put the right
foundations of service, simplicity, integrity and excellence and an opportunity to humbly strive to be committed to our calling to
selflessly serve God's people
Inauguration of St. Xavier's School, Satkoha, Punjab
The newly constructed St. Xavier's School, Satkoha at Satkoha (NausheraMajha Singh), Gurdaspur District, Punjab was
blest by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Franco Mulakkal (Bishop of Jalandhar) and inaugurated by Very Rev. Fr. Francis Carvalho
nd (Superior General of our Society) on 22 March, 2017. The residential facility 'Xavier Niwas' was also blest by the Prelate and
inaugurated by Fr. Carvalho. The inauguration was followed with a short cultural program after which the members of the Society along with the other dignitaries, priests, brothers, sisters and local people of
Satkoha shared a common meal.
During his address, Rt. Rev. Mulakkal acknowledged the dynamism of the Society of Pilar in his diocese. He expressed
his confidence in the Society to carry forward the educational apostolate with excellence and commitment. He also invited the
Society to further collaborate in his diocese by taking up more mission stations and carrying out varied ministries (at present the
members of the Delhi Province serve in St. Clare of Assisi Church, Dina Nagar, St. Mary's Church, Hargobindpur, St. Joseph's
Church, Kahnuwan and Bishop's House, Jalandhar). Fr. Francis thanked Bishop Franco for giving the Society of Pilar the
opportunity to serve in the diocese of Jalandhar. On behalf of the members of the Society, the Superior General acknowledged
the good rapport the Society shared with the prelate. Appreciating the efforts of the members of the Society, the General urged
the members to contribute towards the growth of the institute with values of hard work, integrity, excellence and service. Earlier,
Fr. Albert Fernandes (Local Delegate Superior) welcomed the gathering, which also included the local Sarpanch and members of
the Panchayat. Fr. Mario Fernandes (Local Superior of the Bakshinagar Local House) proposed the vote of thanks.
The students of St. Xavier's School, Bathinda and St. Xavier's School, Rampuraphul staged entertaining dance items;
showcasing the local culture and their talents which are being well groomed in their schools. Scholastic Venito Colaco was at his
best with his violin as he performed 'He's a Pirate' from the Hollywood blockbuster of 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse
of the Black Pearl. The original sound track written by Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer was performed to the local audience who
had no much acquaintance to such classical western music; however the gusto and impeccable quality of the performance
attracted the attention of all those present. Fr. Dominick Falcao was also at his best as he accompanied playing the rhythm guitar.
The duo also performed a Bollywood instrumental based on the song Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh from the Bollywood movie of the
60s, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai (1960). Towards the end of the program, the first batch of the staff members of the newly
inaugurated school implored God's blessings as they sang Showers of Blessings. The entire program was well anchored by Mrs.
Jitendra Kaur (staff member of St. Xavier's, Satkoha)
In the year 2009, Fr. Albert Fernandes (the then Provincial Superior) had directed Fr. Franky D'Cunha to purchase land
in Gurdaspur district of Punjab. It was the vision and efforts of Rev. Fr. Albert Fernandes and Rev. Fr. Franky D'Cunha who
completed the initial ground work. The last Provincial Administration under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Peter Melo Fernandes
took forward the project. Fr. Mario Fernandes the Local Superior of the Bakshinagar Local House, his Local Councillors, Rev. Fr.
Lino Santiago (Local Treasurer), Rev. Fr. Santosh Mendonca (former Local Delegate Superior, Kahnuwan) and Rev. Fr. Albert
Fernandes (present Local Delegate Superior, Kahnuwan) contributed towards the completion of the construction.
Our best wishes to Fr. Albert Fernandes (1stPrincipal of the school) as he shoulders the academic and administrative
responsibilities of the institution!
The Provincial Superior Shares His Thoughts on our Ministry of Education
Excerpts of the Provincial's Circular (DP/67/2017) dated 13th March, 2017
Given that our Province caters to thousands of students in our schools,
permit me to share a few thoughts related to our ministry of education.
I have been reflecting on God's goodness in entrusting us yet another avenue of evangelization through the modality
of the tobe inaugurated school. In the course of my personal study (related to education), I remember coming across a phrase:
'To Teach as Jesus Did'. The said phrase (TTJD) was the title of the Pastoral Letter of the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops, issued way back in 1972. Much can be instructed to those of us related to the ministry of education.
However, a fundamental requisite would always be - the need to reflect if our presence and service to thousands of youngsters
in our educational institutions, gives the staff, the employees and students an experience of Jesus through our person. Perhaps
we ought to time and again ask ourselves if we are 'teaching' and 'living' as Jesus did.
Two years back, the Church celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of Gravissimum Educationis, (The Declaration on
Christian Education) issued by Pope Paul VI during the Second Vatican Council on October 28, 1965. Through the said
Declaration and down the years the Church has stressed the need to ensure that our educational institutes effectively promote
the Kingdom values of Jesus our Teacher; primarily through the person of the educators.
Almost Ten years before, the 'All India Catholic Education Policy 2007' was approved by the CBCI Standing
Committee on April 26, 2007. I would recommend you dear confreres to go through the said document and understand the
contextualized articulation of the principles and directives enunciated. The document urges us to avoid limiting our horizons
to academic development alone, but emphasizes the holistic and fuller development that meets the challenges of modern
culture and society, and even awaken the spiritual depths which would unite humanity to new paradigms of common good
and service. The policy stresses the need to form communities of solidarity, of justice and equality, at the service of all people,
especially the poor and the marginalized. The document wants to remind us that our apostolate of education fully participates
in the mission of Christ and is truly a spiritual ministry that unites the whole human family.
Dear confreres, it is indeed a matter of pride to us all to have a new educational institute for our Province and the
Society. Moreover, this would be a maiden venture in the district of Gurdaspur of the state of Punjab. With a new and yet
another educational institute soon to start the academic year, let us pray that certain qualities, which help the spread of Gospel
values, such as simplicity of life, genuine commitment, accountability, hard work and the experience of Jesus through our
person, be outstanding characteristics in this new school and all our institutions.
I also take this opportunity to appreciate and encourage all our members associated with the educational apostolate in
our Province. May all your efforts bear the mark of Christ's selfless giving. May you be a blessing to all those whom you
minister.
